I’ve drawn David Bowie five or six times over the years, but many of the older illos are best kept sealed away in my flat files like the seven last plagues. Here are three that I’d like to think are still holding up nicely.
The first was for a promotional gift box of pop music-themed cookies, (besides Bowie, the cookies featured drawings of Guns & Roses, the Bee Gees, Run DMC and various other acts). The cookie box served as a wacky holiday gift for Phoenix New Times’ music advertisers in December 2002, (art direction by Sonda Andersson Pappan).
The second illo was for Tower Records’ giveaway freebie mag PULSE, from November 1997, art direction by Ned Hammad. I don’t remember the story at all, but the illo shows Bowie plying his masterful makeup skills backstage for pals Bono, Lou Reed and Elton John.
Third and last is my most recent Bowie illo. This was for The Onion’s 2009 book “Inventory,” for a list of “Songs Ruined by Sax.” The book is a fun read for anyone with an interest in pop culture, and it just so happens to contain a dozen or so illos by yours truly. “Inventory” is presently selling dirt cheap on Amazon: http://amzn.to/xR44wa
Happy birthday David Bowie!
