The week of August 15th, I got a cover illo assignment from Dallas Observer art director Alexander Flores. He was looking for a drawing of the couple from Grant Wood’s “American Gothic” decked out in S&M gear, which coincidentally or not, is an illo I’d drawn for the long-defunct media mag Brill’s Content back in 1998. Always happy to repeat myself, I took the assignment, and I’d like to think I improved on my 1998 version a bit, (you decide: 2011 shown above, 1998 below).
Another odd coincidence: Alex’s assignment reached me just as we were setting off for a mini-vacation in Chicago. Hours after discussing the illo with Alex by phone, I found myself in the Art Institute of Chicago, squeezing past tourists to catch a peek at Grant Wood’s original. I guess the planets were in alignment or something.
