Four illustrations by Danny Hellman for Guitar World magazine.
GW asks four rock guitarists, (Brent Hinds, Jerry Cantrell, Lenny Kravitz and Mick Mars) what they plan to do when the Zombie Apocalypse arrives, (art direction by Alexis Cook).
SCREW’s take on the 1991 roadside beating: a hot guy-on-guy S/M session gone bad, (I guess Rodney forgot his safe word).
Guitar World was the first slick magazine to give me illo work back in 1992, (thanks to legendary GW art director Jesse Reyes). After two decades and countless drawings of amps, I’m still drawing for the mag! Here are three fun spots about a start-up rock band I drew in April for GW’s talented art director Alexis Cook.
I think I’ve hoisted my fan flag for cartoonist Hans Rickheit a few times here in the past. I’ve enjoyed every scrap of his exquisitely-drawn, darkly hilarious work that I’ve seen, and I’ve had the privilege of publishing him in a couple of comics anthologies. You can imagine how excited I was when Hans asked me to offer my take on his delightful twins, Cochlea & Eustachia.
I don’t remember exactly when Hans sent me the invite. What I do know is that it was far enough back that I’m embarrassed at how long it’s taken me to get my shit together and crank this one out.
As you might expect, I loved wandering for a few days through Cochlea & Eustachia’s world, the best part of the trip being our daughter Alice’s questions about the drawing. Questions like, “are the girls escaping from something,” “is one of them a robot,” “is the little monster their friend, or is he going to eat them,” “why are their feet green,” etc.
I just finished a batch of new stuff for Revolver, a fine rock music mag I’ve been working for regularly these past few years. As I peeked into my Revolver folder, it struck me that these things are starting to pile up, so why not trot a few of them out? A grateful tip of the hat goes to Revolver’s delightful crew: Stephen Goggi, Brandon Geist, Kory Grow, and the 21st Century’s answer to Hugh Hefner, Mr. Josh Bernstein!
Cosmetic mishap: did this illo run in Revolver or Marie Claire? (Sept 2010)
Ever wonder where Vinnie Paul gets those wicked cool badass Texas cowboy hats of his? No? Me neither. (July 2010)
Dancing with Mom, (Nov. 2011)
Tales from the Pit: Mr. Pipes, I’d like you to have a severed deer head, (Jan 2012)
The Evils of Liquor, Part 14, (March 2011)
Lzzy Hale vs. “Tampon Rock” (May 2011)
Yet another version of my poster art for the upcoming CBGB Festival 2012, this time for the event’s film series.
Promotional card art for RESTAURANT LA CANAILLE, (4 rue Crillon, Paris). Commissioned by chef Jean-Philippe Crouzet, (I don’t think broiled dinosaur head is actually on his menu). http://www.lacanaille.fr/
These are some Dan Wheldon illos I drew for FHM back in November of ‘05 for their True Stories column, art direction by Mac Lewis. The True Stories column started out as real life anecdotes sent in by readers, but eventually turned into true celebrity confessions, most of them embarrassing. I don’t remember the specifics of Wheldon’s stories, but it shouldn’t be too hard to extrapolate from the illos. I’m not any kind of a racing fan, but I noticed that this guy just died at age 33, which is a shame.
Here’s my new cover illo for Issue #4 of LA-based humor & comix mag THE DEVASTATOR, on sale here: http://bit.ly/pultes
An imagined dust jacket cover for “The 120 Days of Sodom” by the Marquis De Sade. This drawing, created in September 2011 for the “Jacket & Sleeves” art exhibit at Atomic Books in Baltimore, MD, is now available in a signed, limited edition of twenty prints.
